INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Ektacron Vinyl Wrapped Door Frame System

A) Single Doors, Double Doors, Garden Doors, and Operating Sidelites.

The Vinyl Wrapped Door Frame is designed to be secured into the rough opening by SCREWING THROUGH THE JAMB INTO THE STUDS.  This method of installation will allow the door unit to be installed plumb and true, even when the wall is out of plane (or not plumb).  Screwing through the jambs into the studs will also result in a much stronger, more secure door unit.  Nailing or screwing through the brickmould is not acceptable, and may void the door unit warranty.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: At time of delivery unwrap the unit and inspect for hidden freight damage.  Make a claim with your carrier if required.  Check the new unit for correct sizing, swing, glass style as well as any other options that have been ordered before scheduling the installation.  If the unit has mullions there will be wrapped mullion covers tacked to the back of the jamb for later installation, remove prior to installation.

Step 1: Check the measurements of the rough opening wall - depth, height and width.

If the jamb is deeper than required, apply brickmould shims (plywood or similar material) to the outside wall surface up to the jamb depth, less 1/4".  (The 1/4" will allow adjustments for an unplumb wall.)  Building paper should be applied over the shim strip and folded into the rough opening.

Step 2: Apply caulk to the sill plate of the rough opening.  Apply 2 or 3 continuous heavy beads to the outside of the rough opening sufficient to contact the bottom of the door frame sill.

Step 3: The EKTACRON Vinyl Wrapped Door Frame is designed to be fastened through the door jamb into the stud, typically 3 locations per jamb (top, middle, & bottom, in the line hinge locations on the jamb).  Jamb shims are installed between the stud and the back of the door jamb, at the desired fastening locations in the rough opening.  The shims should be adjusted in thickness to just take up the space available and not allow the jamb to be bowed inward or outward.

Step 4: Install the frame into the rough opening.  Check for plumb and level, then start at the top screw on the hinge side.  The most convenient location for the attachment screws is in the door jamb rabbet, in the area hidden by the weather-strip (figure 1).  Check for flush to the inside wall and install the screw.  Repeat the procedure for the bottom screw on the hinge side.

Close the door and check the alignment of the striker plates and adjust as necessary to ensure latch mortise and strike plate line up exactly.  Move the latch side of the frame up or down to accomplish this.  A quick check, is to keep the margin above the door panel at an even space along the full width of the door panel.

Step 5: Install screws on the latch side; additional shims may be required at this point to even up the margin between the door and the door jamb.  Also the latch side of the jamb may need to be moved outward from the rough opening at the top or bottom, in order to keep the frame plumb.  This operation may be necessary to ensure that the weather-strip is compressed equally on all 3 sides of the door panel.

Step 6: When satisfied that the door and the frame are hung square and plumb, remove one screw from each hinge (2 screws from top hinge) and replace with #8 x 3 1/2" long screws which will fasten the door rigidly to the stud.  Shim as required to maintain a proper margin between door and frame.  (Approximately 3/32").

Step 7:Now on the striker side, solidly shim between jamb and wall stud at strike point location to prevent the adjustable strike from slipping, remove the striker screws and install #8 x 3 1/2” screws to secure the striker to the stud.  Shim as required to maintain margin (approximately 3/32”), and adjust striker plates as required to compress weather strip before tightening screws.

Step 8: Adjust door sweep to seal properly but not drag excessively.  Check that the frame installation screws (from steps 4 & 5) are tight.  Apply caulking to the outside edge of the brickmould at the masonry opening.  The space between the door frame and stud opening should now be insulated with spray foam insulation.  Installation should now be complete.

NOTE 1: For Z - bar type storm door installation, it is recommended to install 3 - 2 1/2" screws through the brickmould into the frame on each side, to add the strength required for the storm door.  Placement of the screws should be such that the storm door Z - bar covers them.

NOTE 2: On very wide jambs, it may be necessary to add extra mounting screws through the face of the jamb (in addition to the mounting screws installed behind the weather-strip).  These extra mounting locations would be made closer to the outside of the frame and would require counter bored holes (figure 1) and plugs as described in Section B.

B) Fixed Sidelites

Installations of fixed sidelites is similar to units described in section A) above, with the exception that the mounting location must be made through the face of the sidelite jamb, since there is no weather-strip rabbet.  It is recommended to Pre-Drill 3/8" diameter x 1/4" deep counter bores in the face of the sidelite jambs (Figure 1) at the same vertical locations (top, middle, and bottom) as described in section A).  After installation, the counter bored holes are covered with plastic plugs (available, on request, from Inkster Park Millwork Ltd.)

C) Mullion Covers (shipped loose and tacked to the back of the jamb) are applied to any unit with a mullion after the casing has been installed.
